when i was quiet and still
nature embraced me with song
When I first started paying attention to birds, the goal was to hone my observation skills. Along the way I gained a few other skills too—practicing patience, hopefulness, and openness to adventure. See, the thing about bird watching is no matter your level of preparedness, once out in the field, your results depend heavily on patience, luck, and how the birds feel that day.
I learned that like art, your love for the process needs to be enough to keep you coming back.
As I practiced observing while being quiet and still, the diverse personalities I discovered delighted and surprised me. My new appreciation for the colorful lives of birds is the inspiration behind these paintings.
Some of these pieces are extensions of my bird photography. Others are birds painted from reference photos shared by gracious members of my local birding groups. You can see my photography and read about my start in bird watching at the blog.
