Ask Me Anything
A rare image of me painting in the wild
As a creative I am more comfortable being behind the camera than in front of it.
However, I love getting to know my followers and collectors, so it’s only fair that I share a little about myself with you!
Here are some questions I have been asked in the past by followers on social media.
Q: You are constantly creating! What is your inspiration?
I seek beauty in the everyday and find inspiration everywhere! I am that person constantly taking pictures of beautifully composed scenes, shadows and edges with satisfying angles, the light changing over a field of grass, an interesting colored bug… you name it.
Color is big for me. Just thinking about how every color we see is always slightly different from other similar tones makes my head spin in the best way.
I also think it is important to create even if you don’t feel inspired- just getting into the flow of creativity is enough to draw out inspiration for me.
Q: What is your advice for using bold colors with confidence?
Experimenting and learning color theory helps a lot! Pigments sometimes mix differently than you imagine, so the more you practice mixing and working with them, the better your eyes and skills become and the more confident you will be in your ability to create boldly.
Q: Was there anything you didn’t expect getting into art?
The fact that I have met and talked to so many wonderful and supportive people on this journey is probably the most unexpected part!
Also, I didn’t realize how bittersweet it is to depart with work that you really love.
Q:What is your least favorite part about being an artist?
Admin! Especially taxes and shipping- so boring but necessary.
Q: What must-have art supplies to you recommend for beginners? And what are your favorite supplies?
This really depends on what medium you enjoy. For beginners, understanding art fundamentals is more important that getting expensive supplies.
When you get more comfortable creating, then I recommend buying the most expensive supplies you can afford without those supplies feeling too precious to be used.
For oil painters, artist quality paint makes such a huge difference in the process and end result. I started oil painting with Gamblin’s artist colors (and still love them!). For beginngers, they have a more economical line of paints called 1980 Oil Colors, I haven’t tried them, but have heard great things about them!
Thanks for reading through this AMA of sorts. If you are still curious about anything art-related (or not) that I didn’t cover, comment below and I’ll be happy to respond.
